Dislocks

Jessie and I are going in double duty for this dislock tutorial.

A note of caution from Jessica. This skill can be very dangerous for your shoulders. You will see in the video that Jessie and I have different amounts of risk that we're willing to assume in learning this skill and that is ok. This has to do with differences in our shoulder mobility and stability. The musculature around my hypermobile shoulders does not snap back into action to provide needed support for the follow through motion unless explicitly cued and progressed over time. Just going for it would wreck my body. On the other hand, Jessie's range and stability from all of her handstand training prepares her well for this skill. As you watch this tutorial, think about your own shoulders and use the regressions I provide to guide you.

In addition, consider the impact of wrist locks. Many people learn this skill on straps and then transition it to silks. Wrist locks will secure your grip on silks (and is the only way to do this skill on straps) but will not allow you to release if things go wrong. You will notice that Jessie uses wrist locks and I do not in our demos. Silks provide some regression opportunities that are not available on straps. You might consider not using locks for the low regressions and then once you are sure you can make the transition from internal to external rotation to add them in later. (Beware that not using locks might lead to silks burns in the palms of your hands.)

Prerequisites:

  • finding a weightless moment in your pike tempos (see video)
  • comfortable "dislock" holding a stretching strap a little wider than your shoulders (not necessary for the skill but gives you more room for error)
  • front to back beats
