Pop throughs and slack drags are variants of a group of dynamics skills where the lower hand slides a little way down rope creating a window between the hands for one or both legs/hips to move through to enter different wraps or positions.
In my teaching vocab, I use POP THROUGHS to describe the variants where the rope is on the same side as the sliding (bottom) hand to distinguish them from SLACK DRAGS where the rope is either between the legs OR on the opposite side to the sliding (bottom) hand where it becomes necessary to drag the tail over one or both legs. I use this different vocab because I've found that for most folks this makes them a little easier to differentiate and remember (you’re either draggin’ slack or you’re not!). But lots of other practitioners will use the terms completely interchangeably and that's also totally legit!
In this video we’re looking at POP THROUGHS.
Prerequisites:
- straight arm inversion (bent legs is fine)
- one arm/split grip strength
- reasonable compression
- they can be learned from the mat but if you’re doing them from a beat you should at least have confidence with front-back beats.
